Ubuntu 9.10 reached end-of-life in April 2011. Support for it will be little to none. :(
With 512M of ram you may want to try something lighter like Xubuntu.

Two things you can do to help determine compatibility:

And I think a bigger consideration is video compatibility

The fitbit PPA is only available for Precise 12o4.
Just to be clear, you cannot mount the 12.10 partition with disk-utility and access it with nautilus.
If you can do without that machine I would let it keep working at it. I know that 4 hours is way too long, but if you stop it you are going to end up with a mess.

Those URL's are trashed. You can post your sources.list if you would like to try to save them or you can just cut your losses and remove them.

Not enough is install by default; I use the mini.iso :)
Just for future reference, the purge command can be useful. But /usr/bin can still be a problem. So I usually do a nautilus search (gksudo nautilus) and remove any left over packages.
