    @sharon2 - Yes you can use the Mac disk utility to make a partition. Check Youtube for videos on how to do it. You could also use Gparted.

    Same yaboot issue?

    Try an alternative install or 12.04. I didn't have as many issues when I ran 12.04 Lubuntu on my iBook from a disc.

    Ubuntu is not going to run well on an iBook from what I have read. You are better off trying Lubuntu.

    What did distro did you try to install? Lubuntu?

    I was able to partition an external HD after reaizing I needed to download the hfs formatting software for Gparted. I was able to transfer files onto a partitioned hfs+ part of the external HD once...

    You might have to boot from a disc. Sometimes even if a computer has USB as an bootable option for whatever reason it won't. More likely the Mac you have is not setup for booting from a usb key...
