I would suggest that the issue some are experiencing of the audio being muted (fixable through alsamixer) is totally unrelated to the issue of there being no HDMI audio after upgrade to 13.04.

follow-up:
Went ahead and upgraded to 12.04 then on to 12.10 (had to take one of the 1Gb modules out)
Put the module back in to bring it back to 2Gb.
Now no errors - Got a new problem instead....

This is running Ubuntu 11.10
RAM is in 2 x 1Gb modules.
Each 1Gb module works fine if installed singularly by itself in either of the two RAM slots. So both mobo slots and...

I have a few source video files which all play fine as is.
I want to burn them to a DVD which can be played in a standard DVD player.
But no matter what I try, the conversion process never works...

Insert a plug into the headphones socket at side of laptop.
Remove plug from headphones socket.
Audio automagically comes back alive again.

Yep. As soon as I plug the HDMI lead into the HDMI port of my Dell Inspiron 3520, built-in speaker sound goes utterly dead.... but ONLY for the current logged in user.

I've come up with a sort of solution. The problem with the launcher seems to stem from the fact that the java app must be run from the directory where the app is located.

Can someone explain to me why the program WordBiz runs fine from the terminal but if launched from the side dock or a launcher icon on desktop, the program runs with no sound and no images?

It puts the qchat icon up in the systray/indicator panel (whatever it is called in unity).. but it is a dead icon. Can't click it, (left or right click), so effectively renders qchat inoperable.
