I'm all out of ideas too... A DVD drive is recognised in the BIOS, but when a DVD or Data/Audio CD is put in on Ubuntu, it spins up and no icon appears on the desktop. /media/cdrom0 etc. is empty.

This is brilliant stuff! Can't you merge code with file roller though? So file roller can make split part archives...? Then it's all in one app..
