I do have 16.04 working well on the new iMac 27.
Basic steps are :
Install with nomodeset as described before.
Then your system will NOT boot.
Use rescue CD, change parameters on boot to use...

I have been trying to do this all day. A new 2016 iMac 27"
I also have a 2010 27" and I am used to the "nomodset" etc etc setup.
I CAN get it installed. Both 16.04 and 14.04 will install IF you...
Its the graphics card that is going to give you trouble.
The fglrx drivers don't support legacy cards. e.g 4xxx
