Odd thing is I switched onto the laptop and had the same problem there. Updated through Synaptic and it cleared it.

Thanks for the replies guys! What was happening was that I'd click on Software Update, the box would open for a couple of seconds and disappear. Same with the Software Center.

Hi guys......the software update function was working fine for weeks....now it just crashes! Any idea on this one?

Yes....I know how to do that.....but I wanted to recreate the steps I did earlier to see if that would work a second time.

I then did a normal install on the desktop....no problems at all. But...

Update to this......I just tested it again. Tried to reinstall 12.10 over 12.10 and failed.

Put in Debian....let it wipe the drive, create partitions, then killed the install.

Then a fresh...

I've got no explanation for it either. I just tried to do a Debian install which crashed before it finished, then when I tried 12.10 again it installed.

Got it installed! More by luck than anything else!

I threw in a Debian CD which failed to install.....then put 12.10 back in again and it went straight through the install process. :)

I've tried with a formatted drive and replacing 12.04 both with Ubuntu and Xubuntu.....and nothing works.

Yeh....I'm still waiting as well. Never happened on any other release I've used.

I tried Xubuntu....but just the same.....failing on the wifi setup screen.

Thanks for that.....I'll monitor that one, but in my case I don't even get as far as the webcam section.

Went to do a fresh install of 12.10 on my e-Machines (Acer) laptop via DVD, and it gets to the wireless setup point and just hangs. Won't go any further.

Burn another copy....same thing!

Gnome 3 with Gnome Shell!

I have used Unity for a while but I just prefer the Gnome Shell interface.

I had it for a few weeks on both the desktop and laptop.....but it stopped about two days ago, so the anomaly seems to have been rectified for me.

Gnome shell for me!

I've got the same model with 1Gb RAM and it flies with Lubuntu 11.10.
Ubuntu 11.10 is unuseable on it.

I switched....but I was too late to vote in the poll!

Very happy with Lubuntu....I think it's got a great future!

Xubuntu and Lubuntu are good alternatives.

Give Lubuntu a try....it runs superbly even on my 3 year old Acer Aspire.

Xubuntu was good.....but I found Lubuntu made my old netbook run a lot better! So I stayed with it!
