    This does not apply to the Thinkpad T420, there is no ATI card in it.
    There can be a Nvidia Optimus NVS 4200M.

    I have the same problem (X freezes, but not the mouse) since upgrading to 9.04 and now still in 9.10...

    Thanks Nubbe,

    using alsamixer to turn off the "Audigy Analog/Digital Ouput Jack" solved the problem for me too.

    It is not enough to have the option unchecked in gnome-volume-control > Swiches.
