  1. [ubuntu] Re: Firefox opens .jpgs, but not .gifs, from HTML class folder

That was what it was! I was so focused on the jpg/gif thing that I missed one of the first things I ever read about *NIX! (And I see that you had even mentioned it in your first post, too.)

  2. [ubuntu] Re: Firefox opens .jpgs, but not .gifs, from HTML class folder

Thanks. I think I had already tried both of those things before I posted. Is "world readable" the same thing as Read permission for Owner, Group, and Others? (I don't see the specific wording, "world...

Sure. Here is the exercise I'm working on now:

  4. [ubuntu] Firefox opens .jpgs, but not .gifs, from HTML class folder

I am taking a beginning HTML class at my community college. Last week we did several exercises with HTML documents and .jpgs - those opened just fine in Firefox.

This week our images are .gifs,...

  6. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy crashed, won't boot, live CD won't boot either

    Bump.

Can someone smarter/more experienced than me answer one or both of two questions?

    1. Does this seem like a hardware issue? (And if so, what hardware? OK, so it's three questions. ;-).

  8. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy crashed, won't boot, live CD won't boot either

Here's what happens: After I select "Try Ubuntu Without changing your computer", it says "Loading Linux Kernel," and then the graphic screen with the orange courser on the black bar (What's the right...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy crashed, won't boot, live CD won't boot either

I know I haven't used it before. I see that I didn't make it when I upgraded to Hardy, because I did that this year (after Gutsy expired).

The CD is labeled: HARDY HERON ISO 5-16-08 LIVE INSTALL...
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy crashed, won't boot, live CD won't boot either

I haven't ever booted into the live CD. I made it when I upgraded to Hardy, as a backup, but I did the upgrade through Symantic.

And I did go into the BIOS and make the CD drive the first boot...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Hardy crashed, won't boot, live CD won't boot either

If you mean when I try to boot from the hd, the courser goes back and forth for a few minutes, then it kicks into a text screen (I think it's Busybox) that runs an unending series of lines with...
  12. [ubuntu] [Solved] Hardy crashed, won't boot, live CD won't boot either

I think I killed it this time, but what did I kill?

I have a Dell Inspiron 530N desktop that I got with Feisty preinstalled about a year and a half ago. Being a complete newbie, I have been...
  13. [ubuntu] Re: Password not requested by Evolution after upgrade

Thanks for that snack - I will enjoy it! I haven't learned the appropriate reciprocal gesture yet, but be assured you deserve it in my book!

Also thanks for the heads-up about Seahorse. After a...
  14. [ubuntu] Re: Password not requested by Evolution after upgrade

Yep, that did it. The deletion worked, and my test email prompted me for my password! You've made an old codger's day!

    Thank you very much.

  15. [ubuntu] Re: Password not requested by Evolution after upgrade

It won't let me delete it. When I hit Delete, I get a dialog box that says:

    Allow application access to keyring?
The application 'seahorse' (/usr/bin/seahorse) wants to access the password for...
  16. [ubuntu] Re: Password not requested by Evolution after upgrade

In the Passwords tab it shows my POP address. (I think - format is pop://me@mailserver.) But when I click on Properties, the password box is empty. ???

    Thanks.
  17. [ubuntu] Re: Password not requested by Evolution after upgrade

Yes (I'm fairly certain, although it's been a while) to the first question, and Yes to the second.

    Thanks.
  18. [ubuntu] Password not requested by Evolution after upgrade

    Hello.

I just upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy. Since then, Evolution no longer asks for my (user) password when I send emails. I have the "Save password" box un-checked. I found a similar topic which...
