    deactivate/delete account

I had really hoped things had changed around here, but I see after perusing the T&E that it's the same old show as always. Tired of watching the community continually flush itself down the toilet. ...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Automounting a specific partition on secondary drive

Actually, scratch that. I found the answer here.

I still don't understand the command, but I can rtfm for that.

    Thanks anyway.
  3. [ubuntu] Automounting a specific partition on secondary drive

I'm using rsync and crontab to do automatic backups from my /home partition on /dev/sda to my backup drive /dev/sdb3. The backup partition is ext4.

But the backup partition (sdb3) is obviously...

[SOLVED] Re: A bit aggravated about the T&E section.

Here's a question: if you're that determined to have the same old conversations, why not use the Cafe or Recurring Discussions? Why does it have to be the T&E?

[SOLVED] Re: A bit aggravated about the T&E section.

But, and I can't stress this enough, the T&E isn't for help or discussion. It's for posting a testimonial which is, by definition, a statement. Not a discussion.

    I'm not saying you're not...

[SOLVED] Re: A bit aggravated about the T&E section.

You're free to do so, of course, though I don't see how one can be more open minded than having such an open discussion on how to improve a subforum. The mods could be keeping this all closed up,...

[SOLVED] Re: A bit aggravated about the T&E section.

It's a fantastic idea. I'm not sure if there needs to be a dedicated group of users (isn't that what the mods are for?), but limiting the replies in the T&E can only make it better.

    My question...
  9. Re: PC error " reboot and select proper boot device"

You're a braver person than I, flashing the BIOS like that. Crazy, crazy dangerous.

Glad you got it fixed though.

    [kubuntu] Re: Ubuntu ---> Kubuntu

Well, good luck. :) These forums are a great resource for the new user.

Tip: If you're searching for something specific, use Google. The forum search is terrible at searching the forums. ...

    [kubuntu] Re: Ubuntu ---> Kubuntu

Nearly all of the commands will work, save the DE-specific ones. But KDE has lots of problems and issues that Gnome doesn't.

Best bet is to try 'em both and use what works best for you. :)

    Re: Ms_Angel_D & the T&E

I agree. Especially Ms_Angel_D...when she closes a thread, she's polite and reasonable about it and I don't feel like Big Brother just slapped me down for having an opinion. She seems to have a...

  15. [ubuntu] Re: Why isn't Firefox window draggable wih the "File" bar?

I just tried it and it doesn't work for me in Firefox, either. Not sure what's causing it, but you're not the only one having an issue with it.

For what it's worth, Thunderbird (another Mozilla...

As long as your computer is relatively new, you're going to be blown away with 10.04. It's super fast.

    Good luck. ;)

[ubuntu] Re: LUCID slower than Karmic?

Clean installs are the way to go. Some here have no issues with upgrades, but the vast majority do, so I always clean install.

That's the best choice. If Lucid isn't working for you, then...

    [ubuntu] Re: i386 or amd64?

If you have less than 4GB of RAM there aren't many benefits of running 64bit architecture. Some will disagree with that, but managing large amounts of RAM is one of the primary reasons for going...

[ubuntu] Re: LUCID slower than Karmic?

Murphy's Law is a good one to apply to Ubuntu upgrades. If it can go wrong, it will. Upgrades are notoriously broken. Have you tried dropping the 10.04 liveCD on a flash stick? There's a Startup...

[ubuntu] Re: LUCID slower than Karmic?

Yes, you do. You choose "set up partitions manually" or whatever it says, and then divide up the free space and assign it mount points (generally you have three: root, home, and swap).

[ubuntu] Re: How do I Install Java on Ubuntu 10.4?

I always just loaded up Firefox and went to a site that used Java (i.e. uploading a picture on Facebook, or a speedtest at dslreports.com). The browser prompts me to install Java, and voila. :)
