    A solution for me with Acer Aspire ES1-512 has been to disable xHCI in BIOS setup.
    xHCI enablement was for USB 3.0 speed.

    This computer came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled, but we formatted whole disk just when package was open. Now Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 (updated) is the only operating system (no UEFI).

    Same problem here: at 70% of sessions USB devices completely don't work, and other 30% are working in an unstable way (p.e. pendrive remounting every X minutes). Webcam is affected too.
