    [ubuntu_mate] Re: Autoremove Kernels

This is what I do not understand. For months synaptic has reduced the number of installed kernels to one. 4 weeks ago it reverted to leaving two kernels installed. From then until yesterday, despite...

    [ubuntu_mate] Re: Autoremove Kernels

Sorry, I cannot find any log entry that says that the system was not happy to keep the last 2 kernels for a period of about 4 weeks. Please advise the log to examine.

    [ubuntu_mate] Re: Autoremove Kernels

    See Post #34

Since that post synaptic has happily co-existed with kernels 4.1.0-2.2 and 4.1.0-3.3 without autoremove suggestions.

Today the kernel was updated to 4.2.0-7.7. When rebooted into...

    [ubuntu_mate] Re: Autoremove Kernels

On my system, Ubuntu Mate, 64 bit, 15.10 fully updated, I have always removed all 'autoremove' suggestions by Synaptic, reducing the number of kernels installed to one.

    However with 4.1.0-3.3 now...

  8. Re: fail to upgrade from 14.10 to 15.04 due to broken packages

Why not just get a copy of the Vivid .iso and re-install rather than upgrade?

Then you have a clean system with no dependency concerns.

Re: is 15.04 about to switch from upstart to systemd?

If you have previously added the line "init=/lib/systemd/systemd" manually to /etc/default/grub to enable systemd then you will need to remove it manually.

Please excuse delay in answering but Elfy has summed up perfectly
  11. [ubuntu] Re: My Vivid Vervet Alpha2 install. Default grub is always wrong and other things.

Just boot the computer from the Live CD and work through the install proceedure and select "SOMETHING ELSE" when asked what to do (MOST IMPORTANT)

The next screen should be the one you are looking...

Adding to what Elfy said above, see screenshot

  13. [ubuntu] Re: My Vivid Vervet Alpha2 install. Default grub is always wrong and other things.

This is exactly what I do. I have always felt nervous/unsure about attempting installs through the CLI.
  14. [ubuntu] Re: My Vivid Vervet Alpha2 install. Default grub is always wrong and other things.

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question but I am trying to learn.

  16. [ubuntu] Re: Utopic Mate - removing an old kernel requires restart, only wants to keep latest.

I had a similar thing on Ubuntu Utopic 64 bit when installing 3.16.0-23. It wanted to remove -22 and earlier which I allowed.
However when 3.16.0-24 was installed, now Ubuntu Vivid, it was quite...

    [ubuntu] Re: Media properties

Open the .mp4 file with the default Videos app.

It will tell you that you need to install codecs. Accept the ones that the installer is offering.

Then reboot the computer and you will find that...

Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Regretably it does nothing to resolve the 'blank desktop' bug that jerrylamos and I are having.
