skype for linux exists and works very good: it's easy to install it and keep it up-to-date with apt-get. no idea about macos emulators.

just to report that i rapidly checked it on MacBookPro 5,1.
the iSight does work running a kubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386 livecd and the default instant messenger, kopete.
i had very much pain too, MBP5.1 here, karmic koala.
i realised that every time the beamer is hanging from the ceiling, thus an extension vga-cable is used, the nvidia driver cannot not read edid...
next time it happens, launch top and see which process is using so much cpu.

DVI output works for me with a Samsung 21' external screen and the Apple MiniDisplayPort>DVI adapter. no special configuration, the NVIDIA setting gui recognises it and uses it properly.
