This feature is built-in in ubuntu. In nautilus, double clicking any iso file should mount that file, and the drive will become visible in the left pane.

It was happening to me too. I had to use ctrl-alt-f1 and then sudo service gdm restart a lot. At the end, I decided to reset my compiz configurations, and that did the trick, no freeze ups till now.
