    in your theme's folder somewhere you will find panel.png (or something similar). Rotate it 90° left or right.
    you should get used to the clock. MeMenu(?) could have an option for vertikal panels

    with wmctrl you could read the position of the windows on your desktop. store them all in an array. Read again and compare. I don't know any short way. I tried nearly the same with bash and started...
