a nice way to make first steps, could be netbeans ide for c++. It manages all the compiler things for you. You just have to make yourself comfortable with netbeans, but that should be no problem.

I think eclipse and netbeans are the most comfortable ide's running on linux... Just get the one you need (download, do not use onboard repositories, we are developers, we need edgy software)...
