Is my eyes playing tricks or are you missing out the :
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_password
line....
the sasl_password file can be named anything you like. It is, well, just a txt file....anyway, coming from an administrator background I have this habit of shortening "password" to "passwd". sorry...

I normally for my postmap hash this way:
postmap hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
Just make sure the sasl_passwd.db file is created after your run...
Does 'postmap -q mailrelay.example.com /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd' return your username and password? it should, if the relayhost is done properly.
Also try adding a "smtp_sasl_security_options =...
I use both windows and linux in at my workplace. I feel it is fair to say WinXP is a rather good desktop os. vista, on the other hand, sucks really to the core!
