I have 48 Microsoft Word documents that I want to merge into one single document. (either .odt or .doc, it doesn't matter).
Is there a way to do this either graphically or via the console?
It is not stored in the clear, but it is displayed in the clear when you are authenticated.
Depends. Updates can fix a variety of problems that range in severity from crashes to UI glitches.
You have to think: "am I going to evaluate every update before applying it?". If the answer to...
Your problem seems similar to mine, which is documented in https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/279478
See if the attached fix works for you.
The bug for this is at https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/279478 , and it should already be fixed in Lucid.

I rebooted and the problem went away.
Best of luck.
For me at least, my solution was to sync Evolution to Google Contacts and use their merge feature. You have to go through it manually, but their merger is pretty intelligent.

I'm in XFCE, and I was wondering how I can set it to use ~ as my desktop, rather than the default ~/Desktop. This was configurable inside gconf in GNOME, can it be done in XFCE/thunar?
Odd, it seeemed to go away after I reinstalled all the mono packages via synaptic and restarted my session.

I know how to change the block size with a tool such as fdisk, however I don't know how to do so using parted, which (AFAICT) cannot work with disks that use alternate block sizes. And I have a task...
No, partitions of various sizes that use a block size of 4mb.

Other than the fact that the dongle doesn't send a signal to HAL (afaict) when the wireless mouse is turned off.
Yeah, I know of that feature, but that changes it for both the mouse and the touchpad :)
I have a wireless USB mouse which is *very* sensitive to movement. How can I cause it to accelerate slower while not changing the way my touchpad works?
