I've the same config and the same problem. Press the stop button before switching channels. This helps in my case... I know, this is not the optimal solution, but it works here...

BUT I warmly recommend using the pulseaudio-equalizer from phish3...
So why not have a look at Quodlibet? To my oppinion it's the most flexible music browser for gnome... (It's in the repros btw).
