[ubuntu] Re: Fresh install...nothing on desktop

You may have installed a version of Ubuntu with no packages pre-installed. If this is the case you may have to go back and install a version with packages.

[ubuntu] Re: Fresh install...nothing on desktop

You could try to install a lighter desktop and just delete the partitions you installed Ubuntu on and start fresh. What exactly do you mean by "nothing on the desktop"?
  3. [ubuntu] Re: Cannot boot Windows 8 after unsuccessful install

I had this problem after I tried to install Debian one time. You should go back through the installation and make sure you install the boot loader so you can freely switch between operating systems.
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Can't permanently save things on Ubuntu running off a flash drive

You will have to install Ubuntu to run along side Windows in order to save things. When you try to save things without installing, the system cannot access the hard drive to save them to.

    [ubuntu] Re: Installing win7

You can access them separately if you install Windows and then re-install Ubuntu. When you reboot after that, you should have an option to boot from either Windows or Ubuntu.

    Re: Grub rescue error

I had this problem when I first installed Ubuntu. I just re-installed the whole operating system, which will let you install a new GRUB. Not the most convenient, but it worked for me.
