I lost my printer also. I went into sytem, adminstrator, printer and deleted what was there and then I just searched for a printer and my printer was found again. It worked for me.

I would just reinstall Ubuntu, which takes about 30 mintues, including updates. That should correct any problems you have. You have been at this for over an hour already so I guess it can't hurt...

Is there an older version of this driver you can try when open Hardware Drivers. Sometimes the newest one is not recommended.
I tried your link and it worked fine using XINE. Maybe you should use XINE and see what happens. I have the latest update of Firefox.
Delete the mixer and then reinstall it and see if that helps. Can you set everything to run on ALSA?
There are a lot of mixers you can download load. Try another one.
You might open up the Pulse Audio Volume Control application and see if everything is set up the way it should be.
I have no idea what your wife likes to record but VLC works very well for watching video and listening to music once you get it set up. Hope that helps.
Look under preferences - sound and you should be able to change that setting there.
