That's a good resource. Point six (swapiness) is also something to pay attention to.
10 GB would be more than enough, you'd probably be ok with half of that. On the Windows 8 question I can't comment since I've never used it.
If you plan on using suspend or hibernate you'll need swap space at least the size of your RAM
If you want to look at lightweight Debian based distros I can highly recommend Crunchbang.
I tried the option --store-quirks-as-lkw but it didn't work reliably. Most likely it was because --quirk-vbe-post didn't solve the issue like I first thougt - apparently my computer can hibernate...
Thank you, I'll look into that.
Hi,
I have a Radeon 5800 series video card on my computer and the open source drivers seem to work much better than the ones supplied by AMD in all cases but one: resuming from suspend.

Excellent thread! Regarding the online help, I found that you can copy the contents of
/usr/lib/gio/modules into
/path/to/gimp2.8/build/lib/gio/modules
Hmm, I've that check box ticked and don't experience that problem, but I only have one gmail account though.
In the IMAP server directory field I've entered

The "slowness" of Unity has supposedly been fixed for 12.04, or if you enable the 'proposed' repository.

The kernels from kernel.org are not compiled, you have to do that yourself and that's something I haven't done myself so I can't give you any guidance. But If you want to try the...
The package name is cups-pdf, you can install it by clicking here or by running this command in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install cups-pdf
Those commands will only install the latest updates that has been made available for your Ubuntu release. We normally only get "minor version" updates (e.g. 3.0.0-12 -> 3.0.0-14) except for Firefox,...
I'm not sure, there could be some sort of graphical application to set those settings for you. In KDE there's Synaptik but I don't know of any Gnome application, take a look in the Software Center :)...
First of all, apply all available updates. Then go here and download the latest Ubuntu 12.04 kernel or use these three direct links: one, two, three
Save them to a new folder with nothing else...
You can press Alt+F2 and enter

If you have a spare USB stick I recommend using the tool Startup disk creator (I have my system in English so I can't remember the Swedish name) to make a bootable USB drive. Much faster than a CD :)
The Sandybridge chip sets are known to behave badly, the only thing I have left to suggest (at the moment at least) is to create a Live USB stick and download this file to the root directory of the...
Welcome to the forums :)
So starting LibreOffice Calc and going Insert>Sheet from fileselecting your file and changing Separator options to Tab doesn't do it?
Do you modprobe the psmouse module often? I don't quite understand what it is that you need to do. Do you want the LockedDrags option to be present at startup?
If that's the case then you can...
I can't believe I missed this, please post the output of these commands:
glxinfo | grep -i directand
glxinfo | grep -i opengl
Well, I don't really know what to do now. There has to be another...
Ok, then it's working as it should.
try this:
sudo echo 2441 > /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/backlight/acpi_video0/brightnessThis should set the backlight brightness to 50%
This part tells me that the script successfully enabled and disabled the power saving for the pcie_aspm module.
That should reduce the heat a lot but just to double check this, unplug the cord...
:D Yeah I've read a lot about that too.
Could you unplug the power cord for 10 seconds and then plug it back in, then run the following command in a terminal:
cat /var/log/pm-powersave.log |...
