That's where you goofed up , disconnecting the primary drive. Install *buntu with all drives attached , grub will handle it all for you perfectly.

Reboot the windows machine so it refreshes and sniffs out for other machines on the network.

sudo apt-get install ntfs-config

find ntfs-config in your system menu and use it to configure your jump drive writable.
