    Dunno exactly,in the Settings Manager perhaps under startup, or desktop settings there should be a checkbox named system sounds, and login sound.

    You sould install the gnome-session-canberra package whit its dependencies from Synaptic.
    It will grab some pulse-audio packages , so thnink it over :-)
