these drives are...

my newly configured xubuntu hp desktop (details in signature line) does not recognize the dvd drive, the cd-rw drive or the floppy drive.

they are unmounted

can someone give me a play-by-play...

running xubuntu 7.10 on hp desktop pc

it appears to go into a power saving mode, blanking the screen (like a screensaver)

wiggling the mouse wakes it up, and doesn't seem to affect...
