Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

Since dmizer already said it ...

This Howto I've once written was aimed at Breezy/Dapper and is clearly expressed at the very beginning of the OP post. It may have worked with other, newer, Ubuntu...

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

If you want to hook your printer to your Ubuntu-Box and share it for the client on the LAN you need to install the Printer in CUPS first (in Gnome: "System" -> "Administration" -> "Printing") -...

You're not the only one who reported this odd behaviour in this thread - and I tried hard to reproduce the problem inside a VMware environment (Ubuntu 6.06 Server with all patches applied, Windows XP...

A WEBSITE? This has nothing to do with samba ... X_X ... I hope you're aware of that fact.

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

If you enabled WINS ("wins support = yes" in smb.conf) it's samba doing the job (Name to address, and vice versa, translation).

Tricky question ... this depends on the setup of your network...

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

A little more information would be great ...

I assume you followed the guide, so the authentication error could only be related to the useraccount or samba's setup.

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

Adding an user shouldn't affect samba ... two possibilities ...

    1. Samba dislikes you for the typo: "writable" is spelled WRONG ... "writeable" is much more accurate. Please take a look into it...

Thanks for linking the guide into the "Important links" sticky.

    Re: 3 questions on samba

As for samba: You're fine as long as you're blocking port 137, 138, 139, 445 (TCP and UDP) against access from the outside world (Internet).

If your Windows box gets pwned by a trojan or backdoor...

Re: HOWTO: Setup Samba peer-to-peer with Windows

Nope --- samba isn't installed by default, and the smb.conf that will be installed together with samba is a mere template; not really fit for any use.
