The UI in Thunderbird 3.0 is excellent! Evolution's UI is so grossly cluttered. Thunderbird has great support for Gmail Contact and Google Calendar sync. I use Thunderbird on Windows/Mac/Linux.

Glad, I think it needs a bit more time. I'm pretty certian the first adoption will be as harsh as KDE 4, but I think that's expected.
Debian is pretty much Ubuntu, it's worth a try definitely. I would however suggest Fedora, it's an entirely different package system, which is nice to learn. Fedora has some really good hardware...
