An update two days ago almost removed my entire desktop. I got though with with fix broken install and the next update replaced many missing packages. Today, xz-utils updated, so back to normal...
Same with Ubuntu Budgie, I had planned to wait for updates and try again.

If you want to combine apps and a menu on one panel there is the dash to panel extension. Unity has a global menu and that's what I thought you were asking about.

Both Kubuntu and Ubuntu Budgie have mac like global menu applets which is what I think you are asking about. There is an extension for gnome, but I don't if or how well it works on the latest Ubuntu....
