sudo apt-get install vlc
enter your password when prompted.
if it says no package found please ensure repositories are enabled in synaptic.

I'm sorry to tell you but you will have to reinstall what you have just uninstalled, and be a little more wary of automated package management

i had a similar issue, apt-get install -f (as stated above) fixed it just fine.
Switched to the non-free version of VBox anyway, easier usb support :)
gnome-terminal -x <command to run in new terminal>
that'll do it if you're using gnome-terminal :)

I've heard good things about the upgrade this time around but my advice....
1) backup everything you need to keep
2) reinstall your new version, but make a separate partition and mount it as...
if you have tried the repo method, then remove it again and then run the command
rm ~/.cairo-dock
and reinstall, after that I can't be sure without more information
