Poll: Re: Build-essential installed by default?

I don't know much about security, but I can't help but mention this thought since I don't think I've seen it.

    We're worried about including build-essential because a malicious program/intruder...

Poll: Re: Did you use build-essential?

I read through that other thread, and found out that build-essentials is already included on the CD.

This is really starting to confuse me. Why would the devs take up oh-so-precious space on the...

Poll: Re: Did you use build-essential?

This is more what I was thinking: how can they not include it? So useful, so fundamental, so basic... it is that from which all other software floweth.

I know they are probably leaving it out...

    Re: Dapper Drake DVD Download??

I was also thrown off a bit by the changes made to the CD choices. Instead of install/live/DVD, we have desktop/server/alternate. I figured it out eventually. It would be great to have an uber-DVD...

Poll: Re: How important are these forums to Ubuntu?

Sorry, but this poll doesn't show anything. I did vote 'critical', but only because this poll about forums is on the forums.

Try going to an MLS game and polling the audience on whether soccer is...

Re: Your first thoughts on Dapper?

    First thoughts?

What happened to the old install/live/dvd images? Now its desktop/server/alternate images.

I have only ran the cd live, and I'm already impressed. It just looks really slick. ...

    Re: Dapper--12:00 AM?

I've had really good luck with the Ubuntu torrents in the past, so I hope this next release is the same way.

    Re: VMware question

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is no, you do not need another partition for VMWare.

I did the same thing awhile ago, because I wanted to try several distributions easily...
  10. Poll: Re: Is it a good idea to post an /etc/sudoers file online?

Now that you mention it, I really don't know. Bugzilla is great for some feedback, but this isn't a bug. Anyone know where the Ubuntu suggestion box is?
  11. Poll: Re: Is it a good idea to post an /etc/sudoers file online?

Even simpler solution: instead of posting a copy of the sudoers file online, why not just store it locally on a default Ubuntu install? Something like /etc/defaultsudoers .

    Then you could tell...

    Poll: Re: Coke or Pepsi

I'd heard of this also. Apparently in other countries and/or regions in the US (such as Georgia?) they use the word "Coke" to refer to all soft drinks, including Pepsi.

    At least where I'm at...

The most interesting part of this discussion is about the root beer. I didn't realize that was an American drink.

    Re: Getting Started With Linux

Looks a lot better, I like the color scheme and the layout.

I would consider adding more screenshots. Everyone likes screenshots, even if they're not very useful. And it helps to break up the...

    Re: Best Ubuntu Notebook

Here's a couple sites that sell linux laptops:

    http://www.emperorlinux.com/

    http://system76.com/

I've never shopped at either of them before, but they've been mentioned around here before.

    Re: Getting Started With Linux

Nice guide. I don't have dialup, so I can't do much there. So here are my thoughts for improvement:

    1) Change color scheme (contrast is good, but still is not right)

    2) Take away your age....

    Re: using a ps3 as a pc

I'd be surprised if the PS3 came loaded with a real distribution that you could run in an open-ended fashion.

What I expect is a standard console interface like PS2's or Xbox 360's, just with...

    Re: using a ps3 as a pc

    I doubt it. Link please.

The PS2 had free online play too, but it didn't do so well. If the PS3 has centralized xbox-live like system for free, now you're talking.

    Besides, it's Sony. ...
