Check the md5 of the ISO you've downloaded. If it shows any errors you'll have to download 11.10 again and check the md5 before burning it to a CD.
What if you try to reinstall Ubuntu, this time without changing anything related to GRUB?
I agree. Such upgrades are usually problematic, specially when you have a partition with Windows.
Try to use Ubuntu 2D or proprietary drivers from nVidia.
Have you tried to use Ubuntu 2D?
This happened once for me. Have you tried Ubuntu 2D?
Some things that you can check:
- When you reach this temperature, are you running any programs that require heavy use of the CPU?

All my problems with Firefox hanging the entire system went away after I've installed the 3.5 version.
Also, the version I'm using was downloaded directly from Mozilla website instead of synaptic.

Yes. It only happens when using Firefox.

I'm having this problem when using Firefox 3 in Ubuntu 8.10 (both updated).
It happens randomly in many pages, some of them don't even have flash videos. It freezes the entire system and I have to...
Same problem here. WTF did they do with the ALSA that is causing so many problems?
Same thing here. If instead of shutting down the computer directly from your session you just close the session and shut down from the login screen you'll see that the problem is related to ALSA....
Thanks a lot. My problem was just the alsamixer muted!
I've found what was wrong: I needed to install xserver-xgl in order to make it work properly. After installing it (by Synaptic) and restarting Ubuntu, the views showed properly.
