    If you upgraded, you are still using the old GRUB. Just add them to your kopts in the menu.lst in /boot/grub, (don't forget to run update-grub afterwards) or just upgrade to GRUB 2 :)

    Well, usplash takes over, but performance in X shouldn't be affected. ANd you get better battery life since with KMS disabled you also get Framebuffer Compression.

    Turn KMS off (if you have it enabled), and set acpi_backlight=vendor in the kernel commandline in your grub config. This made my backlight behave on my 5810T, it might work for you.

    Add the following to the GRUB_CMD_LINUX_DEFAULT entry in /etc/default/grub: acpi_backlight=vendor
