are you using a livecd? if not you should as this enables ubuntu to launch from the cd then install (this helps to see if ubuntu will run on your machine before you install).

you can try to partition it manually. BUT BE CAREFUL.

BOOT /boot (30mb)
Root / (10GB)
HOME /home (10GB) [alter these to fit your unallocated space]
SWAP swap (1 GB)

use the JFS file...

the only thing i can think of (and is what i am doing) is staying with "hardy heron" coz it is active for a few more years. and wait until 8.10 is sorted out and more bugs are solved.
