I know exactly what you mean :)
Three running Ubuntu 12.04
One running Kubuntu 12.04.
Very strange problem here.
I have three machines, identical boxes (literally), same motherboards, with one one machine having an Intel video chip while the other two have ATI cards.
I have to say that this was a perfect solution. I know you posted more than a year ago, but who cares?
I was gifted some two year old dual core machines for my kids. They had series 5000...
Even an old post can come in handy.
Brand new install of Ubuntu, then the KDE desktop then...nothing!
Thanks for writing a fix all those year ago :)
And this was solved how exactly?
I know it was a while back that you posted this, but I just wanted to say a big "THANKS".
It was annoying me no end and this is a perfect solution.
Though I generally use Kdenlive, I consider...
You're not the only one.
There are a number of bug reports, but nothing has been done to fix this that I'm aware of.
I'm afraid I can't help you myself either :))

I installed Ubuntu first (Gnome) and then KDE desktop, using Synaptic.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
I'm trying to work out how to make it simpler :)))
The first thing you do is open a terminal or konsole (as it's named in Kubuntu/KDE), then...
Okay. This works.
However,if you're using Wicd you need to change the part where is says:
sudo /etc/dbus-1/event.d/25NetworkManager stop
sudo /etc/dbus-1/system.d/wicd stop
You're not the only one stuck here.
If I find a solution, I'll post it back here.
A friend was struggling with this on a laptop.
We finally renamed .kde
