Did you use the arrowkeys ?
And btw possibly a solution lies in editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. See this thread and the example there:

Did you check alsamixer ?
In terminal just type alsamixer...look for muted channels, the ones with 'mm' > unmute them with "m"
It apppears to me that a new alsaversion is not necessary..
Just curious : what software was that ?
It's plain wrong stuff..
BTW do not edit the sudoers file through /etc/sudoers. Use the 'EDITOR=nano visudo' method.

Check out /etc/rc.local..
Put in a "sleep something &&" if necessary
Don't forget to 'chmod +x' it..
You could try xbacklight
( something like "xbacklight -set 30" )
Put it in startup applications, to start when X starts..

To get a grip on the issue one should really inform himself. We're talking hybrid graphics here and both AMD and nvidia use this technique on intel-based motherboards.
A startingpoint is this link:...

Works with Arch, I guess that Ubuntu has a similar routine?
There's also the possibility to use foobar2000 under wine and use the aotuv's from within foobar.
Just a possibility and quite simple to use.
