Was able to get the remote working via the linux-input-layer described in this HOW-TO guide in the XBMC forums. Turns out this is expected behavior with newer kernels.

Alas, I see nothing firefox related in any of the logs in /var/log.
firefox -P has the same behavior (no window shown, app hangs) when launched in nomachines. Works fine in VNC.
Is there a log file somewhere I can look at to see why its hanging?
