Okay, the last update to gnome-power-manager, which contained a patch to fix duplicate battery listing, also seems to have fixed the red exclamation mark. Evidently, they were connected.

My laptop started doing this too after I ran software updates for the first time in about a month, a few days ago. It's a Latitude E6500, and about 2.5 years old.
I'm wondering if this is a bug...
