Like most everyone else here, I am not familiar with the two programs you are using. However I suspect that a lot of your problems stem from this comment
You see, NTFS does not support Linux...
You were supposed to replace "string to search for" with the actual words you are looking for. In other words:
grep -r "could not write" /var/log/
It might also help to use sudo so grep can see...
There is no need to "disable" AbiWord. Just install LibreOffice, using whatever means you prefer, and you will have the option of using either one.
I'm not sure just what you are expecting, but it appears that sort is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.
Sort normally begins at the beginning (left) of the line and continues to the right...
And this from someone who is running Feisty Fawn??
+ 1 for NFS. Here is a link to another guide to setting up NFS.

You might have a look at Puppy Linux. It is designed to be run from a Live CD (or USB pen drive.) It only requires enough drive space for a small file to track installed components.
Otherwise,...
If you are wanting detailed instructions, then you will have to furnish more details to work with. For example what size disk do you have? How is it partitioned? Your original post lists 5 primary...
I do believe that the OP said that wireless only worked for a short distance with Lubuntu, but worked fine under XP. He said nothing about having Ubuntu installed at all.

I can understand your frustration. Installing Java was my first frustration when I first began using Ubuntu several years ago.
I assume that you want to install Oracle (formerly Sun) java? If so,...
It's right there, the last option. Edit partition - change partition type, label and flags.
You mentioned sharing files with Windows, so is the NAS partitioned as NTFS? If so, NTFS doesn't support Linux permissions. You would control sharing by changing the permissions of the mount point...
I beg to differ with you, but Lubuntu 12.04 is NOT a LTS version.
This quote is from this link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Announcement/12.04
There is an unexpected, and unexplained, space in the word "restricted." Not sure how or why it got there, but I would suspect that it might be part of your problem.
Sun Java is now owned by Oracle. It is no longer in the Ubuntu repositories. Here is a link to one guide to installing Oracle Java

From your screen shot, it looks like possibly all you have deleted is your swap partition and the system is complaining that a swap partition isn't available on boot up. I would try creating a new...
I always have two versions of Ubuntu on my computers, the one I am using and the one I switched from. When I am comfortable with the new version, the old one becomes dormant until it is time to...
In your first two examples, you left out a space. There should be a space between the name of the editor and the beginning of the path to the file.
For example:
sudo leafpad /etc/default/grub

Your error says "command not found", not "file not found." That means that you are not using gedit for your test editor. I don't know what text editor xubuntu uses. Look under accessories and see...
The password it is looking for is the same one you use to log in. Also the same as what you use to install updates. You do install recommended updates, don't you?
I don't think "cat" is the command you need here. Try using "echo" instead. And use double redirector if you want to add to existing file instead of replacing all information.

You are getting very close.
You do not need more than one swap partition. You can have ten different Linux versions installed and they will all use the same swap.
Your numbering scheme is...
Great! Glad everything worked out and just look at how much you learned today. If you will, please mark this thread as solved.
OK, we now know that Ubuntu is installed on sda8. You need to make sure that there is nothing useful on sda2, sda6, or sda7. You can do that by mounting each one and checking what is on them.
