I don't mean to bump the thread, but I also tried following the instructions on this thread for reconstructing the status file, but the hanging still continues. I wonder is it a deeper problem than...
I've done this, but yet it is still not going any further than "Reading database..." is the database itself corrupt in some way? Or does the system require a restart before this takes effect?

When I am using apt-get or Synaptic Package Manager it hangs on "Reading database ..." without doing anything more.

Thanks, however I got so frustrated with this I went back to Xubuntu 7.10 and I will be staying with it until it is fixed :)
Right let me tell you my problem first and what I did.
a) Downloaded the CVS hourly tarball from the rt2x00 site.
b) added rt2500-pci, and rt2x00-pci to the blacklist.
c) compiled the CVS...

I use kubuntu on my computer the whole time, the rest of my family tend to prefer Windows. I might be getting a Macbook soon but I'd put Kubuntu on it if I did :)

I use it because it is much easier to set up servers for my PHP and MYSQL development and I like GNOME better than the windows environment. Ubuntu Dapper is a great OS for me anyway and it runs...
