    possessing the tools are illegal in the UK, they recently changed the law (Computer Misuse Act 1990)

    nmap is a common tool and most firewalls and IDS/IPS systems will detect the scans

    depends if the IT staff check the logs particually as a trace of the laptop used will also be left.
