    After a reboot, the error has not reappeared (yet) after opening chrome. I ran the command:

    sudo apt-get autoremove

    there is quite a bit of packages to be removed. Do you think I should I do...

    Also gnome-control-center still won't open. I get the bus error and pop-up that says that the application has closed unexpectedly.

    Everything looks good, except after rebooting & opening chrome, I experienced an internal error. Not sure what triggered it though.. rebooting or opening...

    looks like it automatically started the GUI login page, yay!

    I logged in and the desktop seems to be restored, as well as the side bar and top menu bar! The terminal window also opens successfully

    I ran: sudo apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop

    and the response was that it wasn't installed, so won't be removed.

    Running the command:

    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

    ...it's moving along...

    Just to verify... I remove "quiet splash $vt_handoff intrd /boot/initrd.img-3.8.0-35-generic" and replace with "text" then press ctrl-x??

    sudo apt-get install g++
    sudo apt-get purge libaudio2:amd64
    sudo apt-get install libaudio2:amd64
