[all variants] Re: Encoding MP3 to OGG

I'm well aware if that (note the link in my signature to FSF's "Play OGG" campaign)...I'm a proponent of open-source codecs (especially ogg vorbis vs. mp3), but not at the price of sound quality...
  2. [ubuntu] Re: Live CD Partition Editor not recognizing HDD Partitions

that's good, but I missed this:

overlapping partitions (it's showing a primary partition inside an extended (sda1)--either that or the partition # is wrong. 'sda2' should be like sda6???)

[all variants] Re: Encoding MP3 to OGG

why would you want to do that? The general rule is to avoid lossy-to-lossy conversion whenever possible (because of sound quality degradation). Most media players support mp3 as long as you add the...
  4. [ubuntu] Re: Live CD Partition Editor not recognizing HDD Partitions

Why can't the live CD see my partitions, and is this a bug or is it my fault?[/QUOTE]

this had been known to work:

I'll try those next. Hopefully some other responses will help narrow the field of choices. There's like 4 dozen links--take me forever to sample all of them!

    Any good linux podcasts?

I was looking at the list here...Quite a few defunct shows--not very encouraging...I tried Georgia Loco's Ubuntu Podcast, but it's totally lame, IMO. Are there any decent ones (end-user, not...
  7. [all variants] Re: Any music player that supports zip/rar/p7zip files?!

what about running this in terminal:

    ?

check foobar2000.exe in your portable foobar folder--does it have execute permission? If not, run sudo chmod +x on it too

    other than that you might...

Did you run this command at the end of step III. (shell script):

  9. [all variants] Re: Any music player that supports zip/rar/p7zip files?!

It seems a variation of that works on vlc (sort of):

  10. [all variants] Re: Any music player that supports zip/rar/p7zip files?!

ok, I see...if it's already in lossy format, nothing to do there

I had a look at that tut...looks really good--can't see where you might have gone wrong...except maybe try "standard" instead...
  11. [all variants] Re: Any music player that supports zip/rar/p7zip files?!

exactly. Which is why I don't understand why people use .rar for music--it doesn't compress the file any more (unless they're, like, wavs!)...luckily I see them only rarely on torrents. You can also...

thanks guys...found the .dll--it's sitting in /usr/lib/codecs, don't remember installing w32codecs...funny thing is, like andrew.46 (iirc) I can 'play' a wmal file in vlc gui--i.e. the scroll bar...

    Andrew.46,

where can I get wma9dmod.dll and is it as simple as copying it to vlc codec dir?

oh, so editing fstab did work (wasn't sure it would). great. Then testdisk is unecessary. As long as it automounts in linux, and you can still boot into windows, it sould be ok.

[ubuntu] Re: Unable to mount volume

    I can see one problem:

You've got two entries for sdc1, trying to mount in different directories--unless ntfs-config screwed up the edit. Remove the 'disco':

  23. [other] Re: cplay not playing .mp3 file (only one) or converted files
