Alright, thanks. I'll try that if a kernel upgrade breaks support. In the mean time, it seems to be working OK (see attachment from working with this tutorial.)
Holy crap, it worked! After removing wacom-dkms (specifically through Synaptic, as instructed, although I suspect apt-get or aptitude would have also worked), I did:
tar -xvf...
