[ubuntu] Re: Dual boot with Windows XP

Try an alternative 'small' Linux version such as Puppy. This is a very small ISO so is quick to download and install on a USB. If that works then you know the procedure works. Then try Ubuntu gain,...

[ubuntu] Re: Dual boot with Windows XP

What version of Ubuntu are you using? I never saw those option screens when using 12.10.

[ubuntu] Re: Dual boot with Windows XP

That is useful info. It is true that running from a USB stick is slower than an HD install but in my case I am happy to accept this. For fast boot and performance I have Saluki Linux on a pendrive....

[ubuntu] Re: Can I password protect Ubuntu on USB?

Yes, it was originally off. I think I switched it on, rebooted and then switched it off again. Only then did it ask me for the password.

[ubuntu] Re: Dual boot with Windows XP

Well I currently use a 16GB but an 8GB would do, the formatting procedure only creates a 4GB partition anyway. I don't actually save anything on the USB, all my data is either in the cloud or on a...

[ubuntu] Re: Dual boot with Windows XP

At the risk of being controversial, I think the days of dual boot are past and there is little reason to do it anymore.

The reason is the availability of low cost, large capacity USB keydrives and...

When booting into Ubuntu on USB I get asked if I want to 'try Ubuntu' or Install. I don't want to install as I am using this on different PCs. Can I do something to remove this question every time.

[ubuntu] Re: Can I password protect Ubuntu on USB?

Well I have just tried booting in again and THIS time it asked me for my password! I had previously set up a new user complete with password but never actually got asked for it, it just booted...

[ubuntu] Re: Can I password protect Ubuntu on USB?

Truecrypt does seem to be best option but it is a shame that Ubuntu does not have password protection built in. I previously used Saluki Linux and Knoppix on a USB and both have encryption and...

[ubuntu] Can I password protect Ubuntu on USB?

I have installed 12.10 on a USB pendrive and all seems to be working well, when I reboot all my saved settings are restored. However, I need to password protect the drive in case I lose it. Is there...

I use Firefox but only because Opera doesn't work properly with Ubuntu. In the Windows world I use Opera 99%.

When I was a Mandrake user I tended to use mainly Konqueror for browsing as i quite like integrated browsers. However, I cannot say I miss it since moving to Ubuntu. Firefox is adequate for my...

Re: How did you find Ubuntu?

It was on a cover disk on Linux Format magazine. I read the review in the mag and decided to give it a go. Previously I was a Mandrake user but was never 100% happy with it. I like the 'feel' of...
