While I have not compared distros on this hardware, I am happy with the performance (sans touchpad). I did use ext2 for the FS type.
During my install, I came across this error and simply specified the FS type in the command line for the mount assuming I used ext2.

In my case the, the hard drive was the problem. It has not failed yet but I suspect that it may soon. I swapped it for another and the error went away.
