Thanks i fixed it by runing sudo passwd then retyping the passwd. found it in another article. dont know what went wrong before though i guess file corruption.
problem is confirmed. no SU access
can login to 9.10 but cant use SU. password works every where else such as as synaptic please help. i can back up to windows partition so no prob if i have to reinstall

p.s make sure you got a copy of your network drivers first(experience talking!) ;)
It's the licence that needs to be legit not the cd. though i'd get it from someone you know
not sure about Vista and it's been a while but i think you can use the windows licence key on the computer case with any install cd. borrow a cd from a buddy and enter you key

I had a faulty USB cable that was loading my lappy down causing the same problem.
check cables. unplug drives and cables one by one un till you get into the bios.
may als try reseating the ram on...
vlc has an eq i can try that. rythmbox doent though

there doesnt seem to be a way to adjust bas or treble in 9.10 either in mplayer or systemwide. i have an Lenovo t60p laptop. Alsa mixer just reports pulse audio. audio is a bit overdriven too i think
