[ubuntu] Re: no wireless connection with 10.04

    CB:

Thanks for the tutorial. It was quite clear. You might want to include a link to a page on how to install Build Essentials for the inexperienced.

I got my eeePC back online without a...

[ubuntu] GDM and Dvorak on Jaunty

I am having a devil of a time figuring out what's wrong with my desktop installation of 9.04. Ever since I upgraded, GDM no longer honors the keyboard variant I have configured. Virtual consoles...

Ah! Well spotted. That's certainly clearer. I think I shall have to make that change and update the site.

[ubuntu] Re: intrepid: keyboard layout in login screen

    Colemak.com has some examples.

It looks like Colemak uses the "us" layout with additional symbols. Maybe putting those keys in, rather than the ones I used for Dvorak would be more successful.

[ubuntu] Re: intrepid: keyboard layout in login screen

Hmm. I didn't have any issue with this at all, unfortunately.

Are there any problems/errors in the Xorg.log in /var/log?

[ubuntu] Re: Where is my HD?

I think the need for CLI depends on a lot of factors. Some of them depend on exactly what way you want to do something. For example, if the OP wanted to access his drive and that's it, he would be...

[ubuntu] Re: Where is my HD?

    It looks like it's "/dev/mapper/nvidia_becfbcee1"

So that's the device. Obviously you figured out how to mount it interactively. To get it to mount automatically, you need to add a line to...
  9. Re: PC performance while playing a Windows-native game under Ubuntu

Ubuntu won't hit your swap partition if the memory isn't totally consumed, so that's normal.

As for performance under Wine, I find it to be a mixed bag. Some things run just about as well under...
  10. [all variants] Re: Remove all panels, alt-F2 launcher, display cpu stats on desktop

I second the suggestion of gnome-do as a launcher. I like it a lot.

alternately, you could set the gnome panel to just auto-hide. It takes up a few pixels at the top of the screen, but you...
  11. [ubuntu] Re: Files gone after installing Ubuntu

Unfortunately, no. If you formatted the drive, it's pretty much gone.

    [ubuntu] Re: Issue installing CDfs

I don't mean to hijack here, but you don't actually need to be root to run make. Make just compiles the software in place. Of course, it's not normally very useful after that step.

    It's the...

[ubuntu] Re: How do you reference a USB drive?

Usually, Ubuntu will create a mount point in /media with the name of the USB drive.

For example, my Kingston USB drive become /media/Kingston. My Amazon Kindle becomes /media/Kindle.

    So,...

    [ubuntu] Re: show running apps

For future reference, if you like GUI tools, the System->Administration->System Monitor will show you all the running processes, as well as having some graphs to show you CPU and memory use.

[xubuntu] Re: x64 not reconizing 4gb of ram ? need advice

Many motherboard manuals mention that if you have 4Gb of RAM it may only count part of it, between 3-3.9Gb, due to hardware issues and overhead.

I don't know WHY, but just wanted to point out that...
  18. [ubuntu] Re: Any way on Ubuntu to get a .SWF file (flash) onto a DVD and play it on a DVD play

Actually, most HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players won't play AVI files. I think that the MPAA probably applied some pressure, to make it harder for people to watch downloaded videos.
