just like in the title - I plug in the mic, but still all the apps use the internal mic. Has anyone encountered a similar issue? Any fixes in the wild?

The driver works but leaves a lot to be wished for.
I did some simple benchmarking - tried to download a file over http from my local network.
On ndiswrapper I got consistent speed of 3.5MB/s....
It's possible and it's called cross-compiling. I haven't used that in practice so I can't give you any details - just google it up and you should get all the info you need.

this past year the Ubuntu team have done a great job with both Dapper Drake and Edgy Eft. They have been working really hard to deliver this high-quality software to our desktops....
To be honest - all the girls I gave Ubuntu to were very satisfied.
That means that girls in general can and prolly would enjoy using Ubuntu. They just don't install it themselves. Why?

Well, edgy is not intented for production use... I don't expect it to be as polished and stable as dapper, but I understand all the people who want to check it out :-) For those with dial-up, in case...
Tests on edgy:
Before tweaking: 45s
After profiling: 43s
After removing --background: 40s

If I needed only a mail client - Thunderbird.
Evolution has this nice calendaring thru WebDAV and an address book thru ldap. I like networked stuff, as I work on different computers (all Ubuntu! :D)...
