Re: Share with the community your gutsy install/upgrade experience
I have a generic computer. Typically everything works great and updates fine. Usually my problem is partitions or some other non-upgrade related issue.
I am running Feisty 64 and the package manager fails to complete the download of needed files. So it crashes out and that's that.
The three file locations are as follows...
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/...4/Packages.gz: Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)
http://janvitus.interfree.it/ubuntu/...4/Packages.gz: 302 Found
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/...4/Packages.gz: Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)
I believe I will do an upgrade using the alternative 7.10 CD and it should work fine.

What did you do to get it working?
I'm also trying...

Re: Share with the community your gutsy install/upgrade experience
I upgraded Gutsy last night. The upgrade was going fine until reboot, when I was horrified to see that after the Ubuntu screen, the progress bar wasn't moving and then the screen went black with a little white cursor in the top left corner.
This morning I escaped into grub and discovered that it was loading version 2.6.20.14 and I selected 2.6.20.16 instead and this worked fine! I then edited menu.lst.
An easy fix for many of us but I feel sorry for any newbie to Ubuntu who clicks the upgrade button in the update manager.
Re: Share with the community your gutsy install/upgrade experience
Upgrade from feisty went smoothly but slowly: about 13 hours although much of that was overnight with the upgrade process waiting for me to wake up to answer reasonable questions about whether I want to keep edited config files.
Only glitch on reboot was that X had a different idea from Gnome about what my keyboard was and the resulting dialogue is ambiguous. Result: I plumped for the wrong choice and borked my keyboard for a little while.
Major disappointment once things were up and running was the performance of Xgl: even with desktop effects turned off, scrolling and page refresh were incredibly, dishearteningly sloooow. OK, my box is not high-end: only half a gig of RAM and i810 Intel integrated graphics but it ran beryl fine under fiesty. The problem with scrolling etc is fixed by turning off Xgl and reverting to X but this feels like a backward step.

I have a Toshiba A75 laptop / P4-3gig speed / 1.5gig RAM.
I've had these problems installing and running Gutsy.
M-Bios Bug: 82545 timer not connected to IO-APIC
Boots too slow "If" at all. I've tried using the alternate Gutsy disk with the same results. I've also tried a couple of the fixes recommended on this forum and nothing has worked so far.
With previous Ubuntu versions ACPI gave me problems and now it's APIC?
Re: Share with the community your gutsy install/upgrade experience
HP Pavilion ze5400 notebook. 7.04 working flawlessly (it did freeze every now and then, but rarely).
Upgrade? Hmm...where's the "crash and burn" option?
It took me FOREVER to get the update started. For some reason, I couldn't upgrade in my account (froze). I logged in as root. Upgraded. Waited for 4 hours for it to download, 3 to install. After 3 hours installing, it came up with a mount error and crashed. I turned it off (the right way) and tried going into ubuntu. After boot, my screen was messed up, none of my apps worked, and I couldn't upgrade again. Fortunately I have no documents on that partition, but everything from the last 6 months on Feisty = gone.
Note to poetiental upgraders: back any document/etc. up BEFORE you upgrade. Or just don't upgrade at all.
Re: Share with the community your gutsy install/upgrade experience
First problem: there is not enough space on my /boot partition. The dialog box says it requires 52.4M is that right? Feisty is only using 11M. Is the update program just being super cautious?
Re: Share with the community your gutsy install/upgrade experience
Upgraded from Feisty last Friday night and I ran into delays with package downloads. Otherwise things went pretty well. I spent a couple of hours fine-tuning Compiz-fusion and Emerald themes. I'm still tweaking after a couple of days of operation. So far so good. I think the only residual problem are the occasional "black windows" that seem to be related to the nvidia driver and the modest 64mb of video ram. I just can't work up the energy to try updating the driver. I'm not ready to work out those problems; right now I just want to have fun with Gutsy!
Cheers!
Re: Share with the community your gutsy install/upgrade experience
after upgrading nothing really works as it should, especially not my nvidia gfx card...
and i cant boot up with the newest kernel, makes my laptop freeze
tried installing it from cd but the same thing happens there
i suggest that if you want to upgrade anytime soon you should check out the forum and see if people with same hardware have got into any problem
to me it seems its mostly laptop users thatve got problems tho
