I have exactly the same problem. If i wanna transfer a large file cca 4GB from an external hard drive to a local SSD the computer totaly freezes. I only thing left i can do is shut down the computer by unpluging the power supply. This wasn't the case in previous version of Ubuntu.
I have the same problem. I'm using 12.10 on an Asus laptop with an i5 processor. The hard drive is NTFS formatted, 500 Gb.
Could anyone provide a list of diagnostic steps I can take? Is there a way to see what made the computer freeze? I left the system monitor up just now, and when it froze, it didn't appear to be doing anything processing intensive.
