Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience
I am installing Lucid Lynx onto my Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop, and everything goes smoothly in the install until I get to the keyboard layout page. Then, it gives an error when I click Forward, that says Parted Server failed, and then the installation freezes at the keyboard layout page. Is there any other way to install Lucid Lynx?
Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience
I did a clean install from Ubuntu 9.04, and so far all I have is a million I/O errors, and once I reset the machine, I'm taken to a bash shell prompt! Then I just reset my machine again, it's working wth? This is indeed strange, so let me reboot my computer again and see what happens. I'll post the results in a few.

I'd rather upgrade than download the ISO files and do a fresh install. I can download the ISO but am resisting doing the upgrade this way.
I just hope that that it's a busy server and things will return to normal soon.
Yep, I think the servers are dying - as usual.
No problems for me, on two clean installs. Probably because I participated in the Alpha and Beta to report the bugs I did encounter :D

Just rebooted the machine again, and all is well. I'm still trying to figure out why I got that strange message in the first place? Oh well, it's up and running and that's what I wanted.

Ralink 2860 wireless does not work in Lucid. This is supposed to be fixed in a release update. It's going to impact a lot of users with 1st and 2nd gen netbooks and (IMHO) should have been included in the release notes. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/496093
There are a couple of work-around posted in the bug report, both both require some hands-on work (installing an updated kernel or compiling/installing the Ralink driver).
--------------------------
I started with Lucid RC (clean installs on three machines) and my experience has been a bit of a mixed bag. Two out of the three suffered from known issues (that I don't believe have been addressed yet).
EEE PC 1000h netbook: Ralink 2860 wifi driver bug, currently working fine using the patched kernel from the bug report I linked to above.
Dell GX260 desktop: This elderly desktop suffered from frequent crashes because of a bug in the integrated graphics: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...el/+bug/566324 . Fixed by scavenging a graphics card from a spare computer.
Generic desktop, AMD 64 3400+ processor, ASUS mainboard, about 4 years old: Lucid installed and worked bug-free on this machine.
Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience
all installed but i missed something in the installer, the ability to erase all linux partitions and install, it only presented me with erase all disk, dual boot and edit partitions, i think that old option worked fine and neden't to be removed
Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience
Clean install, one or two minor problems with Grub. If I didn't have all these other OSes on my computer, there'd be no problem at all.
@dazcaz
Another way to upgrade is to get the alternate CD. Put it in your drive and it asks you if you want to upgrade. Much quicker than over the net, and more reliable, I think - no worries about connections going down.

I have a similar problem on an eee pc with the netbook remix - but I don't get any errors, it just never progresses from the keyboard layout page.
Re: Share with the community your Lucid Lynx install/upgrade experience
I am pretty new to Ubuntu, and I've many problems with the install of Ubuntu 10.04 :
I currently have a 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 in dual boot with Vista. For several reasons I decided to take advantage of the release of the 10.04 version to get rid of Vista and switch to Ubuntu only... And get a 64-bit version.
I downloaded the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.04 from a torrent. I checked the MD5, and it was OK. I burned the ISO image thanks to Brasero and it worked all right. I wanted to check the CD, but I didn't manage to : I got a weird message : "You don't have the rights to read that disk". As I didn't know how to use the sudo command, I assumed that as everything had worked fine, and that the files seemed to be on the CD, it'd work.
I booted my computer from the CD : Nothing, only a purple screen with two small logos at the bottom of the screen. After several attempts I came to notice that if I held the "Enter" key at the right moment (note that it didn't work with other keys such as the "E" key...), I could get various options : "Try without installing", "Install", "Check CD", etc...
But none of this commands seem to work : when I select one and hit enter, nothing happens, and there's a bug. The screen remains unchanged, and nothing happens when I hit any key... After too many tries, the computer starts doing "beeep" whenever I hit a key.
As I had had problems installing Karmic Koala (I have an Acer Extensa with a 1366x768 resolution, so I got a black screen when starting the computer, unless I typed "i915.modeset=0" when starting the computer. But I fixed that bug by writing this in the GRUB), I thought it might be due to three problems :
- Problem of CD (during the burning or something)
- Problem of compatibility this the computer, due to the 1366x768 resolution, like with Karmic Koala
- Problem of compatibility with the 64-bit
- A more serious problem.
My computer is a Acer Extensa 5235. The processor is a Intel Celeron 900 : I guess it's a 64-bit processor, so that should rule out one possibilty...
But I wasn't so sure so I dowloaded the 32-bit version. I burned it very carefully (speed : x10), and everything was ok. I tried that CD : EXACTLY the same problem.
So what I did was trying that 32-bit CD on another computer with a 32-bit processor. Something really interesting happened :
- Same problem with the boot : I had to maintain the Enter key pressed.
- But then, instead of a menu in front of a purple screen, I got a loading menu. It lasted for like 5 or 10 minutes, and then I had a message : "Install" or "Try without installing" : no other option ! That is to say, I can't check the CD, etc...
Anyway, I tried it withouth installing. I had a very long loading, and then it worked perfectly.
So I assumed the 32-bit CD was OK (althought there was that weird bug). As I had had the same bugs with it and with the 64-bit one, I assumed (although this is a huge logic error ^^) that the 64-bit was too...
And right now I don't know what to do... The second bug is minor but I find it even more bizarre than the first one. But that's the first one that's bothering me right now...
I asked help on the French Community forums several hours ago, but so far, no answers...
Thanks for your help !
PS : and sorry if I made many English mistakes... ^^
